Transfer Credits

A student may transfer up to 24 credit hours of coursework earned in another graduate program (and awarded a grade of “B” or higher) toward the 72-hour doctoral requirement. Transfer credits must be requested by the conclusion of the first year of a student’s enrollment in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  At least 18 graded course credits must have be earned at the University of Virginia. 

The Graduate School typically requires students to complete all requirements in residence for the degrees of Master of Arts, Master of Science and Master of Fine Arts.

TRANSFER CREDITS AND ADVANCED STANDING

Transfer requests in the amount of 9-20 credits will result in the times to advancement to candidacy and degree to be moved forward by one term. Such that if your candidacy deadline is 3 years or six terms, that is moved to 2.5 years or 5 terms.

Transfer requests in the amount of 21-24 credits will result in the times to advancement to candidacy and degree to be moved forward by two terms. Such that if your candidacy deadline is 3 years or six terms, that is moved to 2 years or 4 terms.

Please be aware of these changes to your program structure when making these requests and plan your advancement to candidacy accordingly.
