What is the Bridge to the Doctorate program?

Bridge to the Doctorate is a post-baccalaureate program within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences that seeks to prepare students underrepresented in their fields of study for admission into doctoral programs. The Bridge to the Doctorate program offers accepted fellows opportunities for mentorship, guided research training, coursework, and professional development over a two-year period.

Which UVA graduate degree programs participate in the Bridge to the Doctorate program?

Who is eligible to participate in the Bridge to the Doctorate program?

Students who have completed (or are in their final year of completing) their bachelor’s degree and not already enrolled in a graduate program are eligible to participate in the Bridge to the Doctorate program.

Are applicants required to submit standardized test scores for the Bridge to the Doctorate program?

Applicants are not required to submit standardized test scores for the Bridge to the Doctorate program.

How much does it cost to apply to the Bridge to the Doctorate program?

There is no application fee for the Bridge to the Doctorate program.

Do Bridge to the Doctorate fellows receive financial support?

Bridge to the Doctorate fellows receive a financial support package consisting of full tuition and fees, health insurance, and a stipend of for a period of two years (contingent on satisfactory progress in the program).

Should Bridge Fellows find additional work during their Fellowship?

B2D Fellows will be financially supported by UVA’s School of Arts and Sciences and are not eligible to get outside employment during their Fellowship--unless the work is directly relevant to their academic training and has been approved by the Dean’s Office

Can the Bridge to Doctorate program be completed remotely?

Bridge to the Doctorate is a residential program that requires in-person participation. Incoming fellows should plan to arrive at UVA in mid-July for orientation and summer workshops before the start of classes.

Are Bridge to the Doctorate fellows considered graduate students?

Bridge Fellows are registered as graduate students in the School of Arts and Sciences, but there are no school-wide program requirement attached to their designation. Bridge departments might have requirements for B2D Fellows in their department as part of their customized academic plan.
