Graduate Environmental Humanities

The Environmental Humanities Graduate Certificate at the University of Virginia trains students from any discipline to integrate humanistic methods, archives, and interpretive tools into cross‑disciplinary environmental research. Through a required seminar, elective coursework, and sustained participation in research colloquia or transdisciplinary labs, students learn to examine environmental issues using pluralist, collaborative approaches that bridge the humanities, sciences, and social sciences.

The program prepares students to engage deeply with the cultural, historical, ethical, and narrative dimensions of environmental challenges while developing the skills to communicate research across fields and public contexts. By combining rigorous academic training with opportunities for collective inquiry, the certificate equips emerging scholars to contribute meaningful, human‑centered perspectives within broader environmental scholarship and practice.
